These pieces were recorded in response to the Julia Margaret Cameron and Lewis Carroll photographic exhibitions. The sound sources here are primarily found-sounds organised into sonic constructions. However, there is also use of period oboes and fifes found in the attic of Dimbola, plus recordings of the vast collection of cameras, field-recordings from Freshwater Bay, the forest, and Tennyson Down, and recordings made at the Lewis Carroll Conference. August - October 2008.
01.
Alethea : A Boating Song for Alice Lidell (4.50)
Being
a pleasant boat trip, perhaps at Freshwater Bay, with a boat specifically
made for Alice Liddell - the subject of two of Mrs Cameron's most striking
photographs and Lewis Carroll's inspiration for "Alice in Wonderland".
Lewis Carroll invented the tale of Wonderland taking Liddell, as a child,
and her sisters, on rowboats down the river in Oxford. This boat is one
of the small seafaring variety for the adult Alice, as photographed by Mrs
Cameron at Dimbola Lodge.
02. From the Cabinet (1.23)
Being a musical list of various chemicals used in early photographic
printing processes. Incorporating salt printing, platinum & palladium
printing, pellet printing (positive cyanotopes), Van Dyke printing, and
Kallitypes.
03. Huge, Out of Focus
Heads - Part One (3.26)
A response to the images on display in the Julia Margaret Cameron
photography gallery, produced using a Victorian fife, an Edwardian glockenspiel
(or Pixiphone), and a reedless oboe.
04. Lewis Carroll Fantasia Mix (8.43)
A sound-collage using elements from Alice in Wonderland, combined
with recordings from the Dimbola Lodge Lewis Carroll conference.
05. Julia and the Vine (4.44)
Being an audio account of accelerated growth of the sizeable
vine in Mrs Cameron's garden. The vine covered most of the wall of one side
of the house, and this composition attempts to paint a picture of this vine
through an impressionistic take on the idea of time-lapse photography. Composed
using recordings made of flora, fauna, and objects in the garden of Dimbola
Lodge, elements of string music from Benjamin Britten, Ludwig Koch's recordings
of English birdsong, and the nonsense-botany of Edward Lear. Features the
voice of Jack Phoenix.
06. Moustache Guard (4.08)
A phenomenal Victorian invention, highly practical and fashionable
facial appliances for the common hirsute gentleman. It is not known if a
visitor to Dimbola Lodge ever wore a moustache guard.
07. Lewis Carroll Bricolage Suite : George & The Dragon (3.43)
The first of three responses to images by Lewis Carroll.
08. Lewis
Carroll Bricolage Suite : Tea Merchant (6.25)
The second of three responses to images by Lewis Carroll.
09. Lewis Carroll Bricolage
Suite : Tim (3.28)
The third of three responses to images by Lewis Carroll.
10. Huge, Out of Focus
Heads - Part Two (4.53)
A response to the images on display in the Julia Margaret Cameron
photography gallery, produced using a Victorian fife.
11. Hours Upon Hours (2.00)
A little ditty about Mrs Cameron, using the titles and subjects
of her work as lyrical starting points . All the percussive sounds are generated
from cameras in the attic of Dimbola Lodge.
12. Tennyson's Afternoon
Promenade (2.56)
A little waltz composed of cows and bees on the way up to Tennyson
Down. There's a strange magic in the air. Also included are field-recordings
of the sea on a secluded beach to the left of Freshwater Bay, and some simple
piano repetitions.
